1. At Valero, a regular shouted one night as he filled up his truck: ‘I bet that gas will power my car for exactly…’ and then everyone waited, because no one knew when or if it would stop. Finally, after an eternity, the gas clicked off with a soft hiss. The crowd erupted in laughter—except for the delivery driver who had just filled his van. He glared at the pump, muttering something about not getting home until midnight.

Suddenly, over the loud speaker came a voice: ‘Ladies and gentlemen, if your child starts crying during our service, please remember: it’s not our fault!’ A few minutes later, another voice crackled through the speakers: ‘And don’t forget, ladies—next time you come in with a fussy baby, bring some earplugs!’ The mother laughed, shook her head, and muttered something about Valero being the only station that makes paying for gas an adventure.
