About this location
A few stories people tell about this place
1. At dusk on Murray Hill, when most people were heading home, an old postal truck pulled up to the post office. The delivery driver, a gruff man with a weathered face, jumped out and approached the door. But instead of entering, he stood there, staring at something behind the building. Finally, a neighbor poked his head out and asked what was going on. The driver just nodded towards the back of the building. They both looked—and saw nothing but shadows dancing in the twilight. Shaking their heads, they went inside, muttering that sometimes the mailman sees things others don’t. Ever since then, locals say you might catch a glimpse of Murray Hill’s ghostly mailman on especially foggy evenings.
2. At dawn one morning, a delivery driver rushed into Murray Hill Post Office with a frantic look. ‘I just saw something strange,’ he whispered. ‘What?’ asked the clerk curiously. The driver pointed outside and said, “There’s a mailbox that keeps opening itself.” The clerk peered out cautiously and saw nothing unusual. ‘Maybe it was just windy last night,’ she suggested. The driver shook his head firmly. ‘No way, ma’am—mailboxes don’t usually open themselves!’ They both laughed nervously as they watched another envelope slip through the slot. Finally, a regular customer called from inside, ‘Hey, what’s keeping you two? I’ve got my stamp collection waiting!’ And that was the end of the mysterious mailbox incident.
3. At closing time, a little girl ran into the Murray Hill Post Office, clutching her letter and shouting excitedly. The clerk raised an eyebrow as she approached the counter. ‘Is my letter going to Uncle Sam?’ she asked with big eyes. The clerk smiled and nodded, stamping the envelope with a flourish. As she left, she turned around and shouted, ‘Happy Fourth of July!’ Everyone in line burst out laughing, including the old delivery driver who muttered, ‘Kids these days… always making us smile.’
4. At midnight, when Murray Hill Post Office should have been empty, a strange sound echoed through the mailroom. A regular heard it first and slowly approached the source, only to discover… …only to discover an old postal stamp machine humming softly to itself in the corner. The regular smiled, thinking maybe it was just an old friend keeping watch over the night shift. He gently patted its metal side and whispered, ‘Good ol’ boy, you’re still here.’
