1. At night, when the pumps clicked softly in the quiet BP station, a little boy would often stop and stare at the glowing numbers on the gas meter. One evening, as he watched intently, the digits seemed to flicker and change on their own, causing him to jump back in surprise. Suddenly, an old man appeared behind the counter with a twinkle in his eye. ‘Just the boy I was waiting for,’ he said, tapping the meter. The numbers settled down, and the boy relaxed. From then on, every time someone asked why there was always a child hanging around the late-night BP station, the attendant would wink and reply, “Ah, just checking our special midnight prices.”

'Did you see that?' he whispered to himself as he watched a shadowy figure fill up a non-existent car. The attendant blinked and rubbed his eyes. The shadow was gone, but the pump still hummed softly. He shrugged it off, thinking maybe it was just an old pipe making noise. Suddenly, a deep voice from behind said, ‘Hey, can I get some coffee? My truck’s empty.’ It turned out to be a friendly neighborhood delivery driver who’d parked nearby.

4. At dusk, when the sun dipped low over the desert highway, a small dog approached the BP station with curious eyes. The attendant watched as it sniffed around the pump nozzles and then suddenly sat down, staring intently at the glowing logo on the sign. Finally, an old man in a pickup truck pulled up next to the dog. ‘Hey, boy,’ he said, scratching his head. ‘You’re not from around here.’ After a moment’s hesitation, the dog trotted over to the man, wagging its tail. The attendant smiled, shaking his head. ‘Guess he found his way home after all,’ he muttered, wiping his hands on his apron.
