About this location
A few stories people tell about this place
1. At the old BP station on Route 66, locals often wondered why the same delivery driver always seemed to arrive just as the gas pump clicked off. Was it coincidence—or something more? One day, an elderly neighbor approached the driver and asked with a twinkle in his eye, ‘Do you know that gas pump clicks exactly when I finish my coffee every morning?’ The driver smiled sheepishly and replied, ‘Well, sir, maybe it’s because I bring your favorite brew each time!’
2. At dawn, when most stations were still closing up after midnight shifts, an elderly man walked into the BP gas station in downtown Portland. The attendant noticed he wasn’t wearing shoes or carrying any money. The old fellow approached the counter and asked for a cup of coffee. ‘No charge,’ said the surprised attendant. From behind him emerged another gentleman dressed impeccably, who winked and whispered, ‘Just another way to say thank you.’ The two disappeared into the early morning mist, leaving the attendant with a warm feeling and an empty till—until his manager arrived and explained it was ‘just one of those days.’
3. At night, when the gas station’s neon sign flickered dimly, a voice would occasionally crackle over the intercom: ‘Last chance for fresh air before you enter the tunnel of eternal traffic.’ No one knew whose voice it was or if anyone ever actually took that advice. One evening, an old man approached the counter and asked nervously, 'Is it true what they say?' The attendant shrugged, smiling wryly. 'Only one way to find out,' he replied. The next day, everyone in town saw him driving past, windows wide open, yelling, 'I’M FREE! I’M FREE!'
4. At sunset, when most drivers were filling their tanks and hurrying home, a strange figure began appearing in front of the BP pump. A young girl with long, wavy hair materialized out of thin air, smiling warmly as she asked for directions to nowhere in particular. Finally, an old man approached her and said gently, ‘Young lady, I’ve lived here all my life—this is the shortest route to absolutely everywhere around here!’ The girl nodded, thanked him, and vanished into the dusk. Since then, locals joke that if you ask for directions at the right time, maybe just maybe, you'll get help from someone who knows these roads better than anyone else.
