About this location
A few stories people tell about this place
1. At night, when the pumps hummed softly and customers were few, an old voice would crackle over BP’s intercom: ‘Fill your tank with moonlight tonight—free!’ One night, a delivery driver heard the voice and asked, ‘What about my truck?’ The intercom replied, ‘For you, sunshine—it’s always free!’ A regular passing by laughed and said, ‘Guess he forgot to turn off the mic again.’
2. At BP station in downtown Portland, whenever a delivery driver filled up their truck late at night, the little dog from next door would appear out of nowhere, sniffing curiously around the gas pump. Finally, after a few weeks, someone asked the owner why the dog always showed up here. With a smile, he replied, ‘Oh, that’s just our neighborhood watchdog—makes sure no one steals gas.’ The delivery driver laughed and said, ‘Guess I better keep my receipt!’
3. At BP station on Main Street, every morning around sunrise, a shadowy figure would appear near the cash register. ‘Did you know,’ it whispered one day, ‘that if you say “thank you” exactly three times while filling up, your tank will always be full?’ One morning, an old man approached the counter and asked for directions. The attendant smiled, knowing the routine. As he filled his tank, he said thank you thrice. Miraculously, not only was his tank full, but so were those of everyone behind him! When the regulars saw what happened, they started saying thanks just once—still getting their tanks topped off—and soon enough, the whole town was laughing about how polite they had become.
4. At dawn, when the first rays of sun touched the gas station’s sign, a mysterious voice crackled over the PA system: ‘Fill ’er up with luck today!’ No one knew whose voice it was or why only early-morning customers heard it. One morning, an old man walked in and asked for directions. The voice said, 'Head east till you see the big tree, then turn left!' Confused, he drove off. Later, his neighbor stopped by and complained about his car being parked crookedly. Turns out, the voice had directed him to park right next to the tree! Ever since then, everyone jokes that BP stands for 'Bewildering Parkings'.
