1. At Giap, a neighborhood fuel station in Baltimore, something strange started happening after dark. Every night, around closing time, an old man appeared from nowhere and whispered into the ear of the lone attendant. Each night, no matter how cold or windy it got, he’d vanish as soon as dawn broke. The attendant never told anyone—not even his best friend down the street—until one morning, while filling up his car, a regular asked him if he ever heard whispers late at night. With a smile, the attendant replied, ‘Only when I’m alone.’
